Si no plan, va a fallar.

Abogado

Translate Request has too much data
Parameter name: request
Translate Request has too much data
Parameter name: request

Despite all of mankind's advancements we've still not found a way to add hours to the day, be two places at once, or stop time to get a few more things done. Most small business owners long for these breakthroughs. But as they don't appear imminent, here are some non-science fiction approaches to lengthen your day. The trick is to work smarter, not harder.

Schedule it

A master schedule breaks each week into blocks of time dedicated to certain tasks-marketing, administrative work, time to see clients, time to care for and work with dogs, etc. And also non-work blocks-time for family and friends, exercise, hobbies, errands and house cleaning, and so on. In short, each thing that needs room in your schedule is assigned a specific spot or spots.

The master schedule ensures pre-planned room for everything you need to get done or want to do. It takes the guesswork out of trying to juggle all the balls you've got in the air. Instead, you can concentrate on the one your schedule says to, setting the others down without worry. And for those of us with the procrastination gene, it means a structure for productivity.

Use do dates

Without a master schedule so many great ideas-marketing projects, new services, a nice handout on Nothing For Free-are wistfully pushed off to "someday, when I get a chance..." With a master schedule, you simply assign your great ideas to the next open marketing or project time slots in your calendar. These are do dates. So much more effective than traditional due dates, which cause stress as they approach and guilt as they pass, do dates allow you to get things done in the specific blocks of time assigned for them.

For example, I write a regular business column for a dog training journal. If you were to look at my calendar you'd see the due dates written in very small letters-almost not noticeable. But look a couple weeks ahead of each of those and you'll find the do dates for each article written in large type. Thursday mornings are writing time in my master schedule, so at the beginning of each year I block six Thursday mornings out for my column articles. I never have to worry about when I'm going to get them done, or suddenly realize the day before that I'm up against a deadline.

Take time off

Seriously. Do it. You have to. We're not made to run 24/7. There's no such thing as a perpetual motion machine. I often ask, when I'm lecturing to trainers, for a show of hands from the audience-how many of you have two days off every or most weeks? It's not uncommon to see five hands go up in a room of 200 or 300 people. Ask about one day a week and you may see a dozen or so arms raised. That's not tenable, not sustainable, and it doesn't have to be that way.

Part of using a master schedule is building in the downtime. The only way to get days off is to take them. Cross them out in your calendar and then don't schedule over them. It's easy to fill our lives to the point of overflowing. The only way to stop it is to call time-out. The earth will continue turning, I promise.

Prioritize

Creating a master schedule may force you to confront what you've long suspected-that there simply aren't enough hours in the day or days in the week to do everything you have on your plate. It's time to make some choices. And they get made whether you make them deliberately or not. In my business coaching work, I've heard many trainers lament the lack of time for their own dogs, or for the exercise regime they promised themselves this year, or for more time with family- or just time to do nothing at all.

It's often the most precious things that get cut when we try to stuff more into our lives than can actually fit. Taking a hard look at everything you do allows you to make conscious choices about what to set aside. There may not be anything you're happy about letting go, but putting off the decision doesn't mean it doesn't get made. It means that more important things fall by the wayside. It means a lack of balance between work and home (some of us lean toward working too much, some of us toward not enough) and a path toward eventual burnout.

Be realistic

There are fewer hours in the day than we think, and fewer minutes in each hour. I'm convinced of it. I'm reminded of eating at a buffet and never failing to put far too much food on my plate. We think we can squeeze a bit more in, take on another project, say "yes" to one more request. And everything takes longer than it seems like it should. Part of successful scheduling is making peace with this. There really are only 60 minutes in an hour and they go by fast. There are only 24 hours in a day and we sleep and eat our way through quite a few of those. We might as well accept that everything will take longer than we think and plan accordingly.

Plan emergency and flex time into each day and week and project. Assume that things will come up, that clients and colleagues will make requests, that there will be unanticipated opportunities you'll want to pursue, that your best-laid plans will occasionally have flaws. The extra time built into the schedule keeps everything on target when the unpredictable-but-inevitable shows up.

Start by building an overflow or catch-all block into your weekly master schedule. For example, a two-hour spot that you can toss any miscellaneous tasks into or use when something else goes over its allotted time. When you're planning something larger, such as a new marketing project, give it several more blocks of time than you expect it to take. If you finish early you can move the next project up or even treat yourself to some extra time off.

And then practice saying "no." Go back to the step where you set your priorities and check any new requests or opportunities against them. It's hard sometimes. We think we should do things just because we could, because we've been asked. But is there truly room? Does it serve your central goals? Is it worth neglecting something else? If the answers are no, take a pass.

Schedule your clients

Don't hand clients the keys to your business by asking questions like "When would be good for you?" when scheduling appointments. Remember that having a master schedule means having set times for everything. This includes client appointments. Choose the times that you will see clients, preferably keeping them the same each week and clustering them for efficiency. Then offer clients your open slots to choose from. (And watch those geographical boundaries- don't lose time unnecessarily in the car.)

Stand firm when potential clients say none of your times work. Simply offer them what you have open the following week to give them more choices. Do not bend if they request a day or time that's not on your master schedule. Tell them kindly and confidently, "I'm sorry; I don't have appointments at that time. It looks like our schedules may just not be a match. I can offer you a referral to a colleague who may better be able to accommodate you." (You can leave that last sentence out if there isn't anyone you can refer to.) I'm willing to bet (and I can back it up from years of experience coaching trainers on this) that 9.9 times out of 10 they'll suddenly find room in their schedules for one of your pre-set times. Confidence breeds confidence. When you don't seem to need their business you're suddenly that much more desirable. Professionals (think doctors, lawyers, etc.) don't ask clients what days and times are good for them; they offer set appointments.

Hire help

I know the protest-"I can't afford it." My comeback, always, is "Can you afford not to?" Let go the stigma; you don't have to be wealthy to hire help. Let go the fear; the $10 you pay someone else frees up an hour you could use to make $75 or $100 training, or to work on a marketing project to bring in more clients. Spending money really can make you money. If you're stretched so thin that you truly cannot fit in the time to see more clients or work on pushing your business forward, how will you break the impasse if not by bringing in some assistance to free up your time?

Start small if you feel unsure or the budget is tight. Even five hours a week can make a significant difference. Choose some things that weigh on you, that you either dread or feel are a taking up needed time. Hand them over. They could be business tasks such as administrative work, accounting, cleaning your daycare floor, printing and organizing handouts for classes, returning phone calls, etc. Or perhaps help at home would free you up-some babysitting, dog walking, or house cleaning.

Stop the hamster wheel

If you're in so deep that you can't see where the time would come from to sit down to take these steps, it might be time for a shut-down. Take a day-a week if you can-and turn it all off. No phone calls or email or client appointments. Use the time to catch your breath and create your master calendar. To take a look at all the balls you juggle and decide which to let fall and which to protect. To look at where you might want help and take steps toward finding it. To set do dates so you know what you're going to be able to accomplish and when. To make any other changes you need to allow you to move forward refreshed and with a new plan in place.

If you're already scheduled to the hilt it may be difficult to find this time. Your first step, then, is to look forward just far enough that there's a day or week not already full. Block it out. With a fat Sharpie pen. Protect it. Resist the temptation to schedule anything over it; there's nothing that can't wait. Because there isn't anything as important as achieving a sustainable schedule-your business' success and longevity depend on it.

?Qué motiv? a hacerlo?

As? que y obtener activa.

Blog.

No seas t?mido.

Sometimes because we don't know how to get out of doing so, sometimes because we love what we do and enjoy talking about it, and often because we care about dogs and want to see them get the help they need.

But it's a losing proposition for all involved to give free advice. It cheats you out of business and devalues your professional knowledge and skill, it reduces the chance the dog owner will pursue the help he or she needs, and it doesn't get the dog any real help. Advice given in a social situation is seldom followed - and you can't offer the kind of detail and support that most cases require.

Wherever it happens, you know how it goes. Someone asks you what you do. You tell them. Next thing you know you're listening to their dog problems and being pumped for free advice. And it's a funny thing - we often feel compelled to give it. Sometimes because we don't know how to get out of doing so, sometimes because we love what we do and enjoy talking about it, and often because we care about dogs and want to see them get the help they need.

Setting boundaries for public and social spaces
Few people are aware of the level of education and experience a qualified trainer possesses, of the amount of information needed to diagnose a behavior, and of the degree of thought put into a behavior modification plan. As a result, they don't feel shy about asking for quick-fix tips. The trick to handling these situations is to politely avoid giving too much free advice while creating the highest likelihood that they will actually seek your professional help.

Here is a strategy you can try:
1. Interrupt
2. Empathize
3. Build Confidence
4. Redirect
5. Tip (optional)
6. End

Step 1: Interrupt
Let's say a woman begins her story, "My little dog Sandy barks so loud you'd think she was a German Shepherd, or even two dogs! Drives me crazy. She barks all day long. One time she even..."

This is a good time for step 1 - the interruption. Allow the other person to tell just enough of the story to give you a hint of the problem, but don't let them get going full swing. The more they invest in the story, the harder it will be for you to avoid their request for immediate answers and explanations. Intervene in a friendly and assertive manner, and try to be reinforcing to soften the interruption. "Sounds like Sandy is quite the character! Amazing how little dogs can have such big personalities."

Step 2: Empathize
Immediately make it clear that you've heard their concern: "Barking, especially when it's constant, can be so frustrating! It's hard to hear yourself think!"

Step 3: Build Confidence
This is the time to elegantly let them know you're an expert and that diagnosis and treatment is taken seriously in the world of professional dog training. "That kind of barking can be many things - demand barking, barrier frustration, alarm barking, separation anxiety..."

Step 4: Redirect
This is your opportunity to suggest your services, which also gently but clearly implies that you require payment for your expertise. "To know for sure what makes Sandy bark, I would need to do a complete diagnostic interview. Then I can work with you to design a treatment plan to best suit your needs. Here's my card if you'd like to do that. You can also take a look at my website to learn a little more about what I do and to see my background and credentials. I'd be delighted to work with you and Sandy to see if we can't create a nice, quiet house for you."

If you're really gung-ho and have a feeling they wouldn't mind, you might ask for their contact information (but don't scribble on the backs of receipts, carry around a small book for this) so you can follow up with them.

Step 5: Tip (Optional)
If you think it's warranted, tip them by offering a management or training suggestion. An example for Sandy's mom might be, "In the meantime, here's one thing you can do that might help: Reward Sandy any time she's not barking. If you notice the house is quiet, take a moment to give her a cookie or a belly rub. Let her know that you appreciate the peace." Depending on the situation, your aim could be to offer a measure with immediate effect in order to build confidence in your ability to help. Other times you might present a management suggestion to diminish risk or to create some improvement in the life of either the owner or the dog.

Step 6: End
It's important now to end the conversation. If you don't, it's likely the person will jump in to ask follow-up questions or tell you additional information or stories about their dog, which puts you right back in the hot seat. If you're in a situation where you can walk away, do so. "It was really nice meeting you and hearing about Sandy. I hope you'll let me know if I can be of help. Have a great day now!" If you're trapped - in a line or waiting room, for example, change the subject. "By the way, do you happen to know what the weather is supposed to be like this weekend? I've been hearing all sorts of conflicting reports. I'm putting on a birthday party this weekend and not sure whether to plan it for inside or out in the garden. It's for my little niece. If she had it her way, we'd..."

Additional advice on giving advice
Though the six steps are broken down for you here, in practice they run together and overlap. Try not to pause, as a determined dog storyteller always will look for a way back in. And practice makes perfect - though it may seem a little silly, try practicing this technique in the shower or while you're driving. Recall a past situation where you were ambushed with a "A dog trainer! My dog..." story. Re-enact the scene in your head with these six steps. The more you train yourself to respond this way, the easier it'll be next time you find yourself cornered at a dinner party.

Finally, be aware of the ethical and liability issues that sometimes lurk in these conversations. For example, if the situation described to you is potentially dangerous for the dog or other people, or if it sounds like the dog's quality of life is threatened, you may feel compelled to have a longer discussion. But be careful - advice given in public or social contexts can never be as complete as you would want it to be, and you do not have a contract to help cover your liability.

Center your advice in Step 5 (Tipping) around management suggestions to reduce any potential risk to the dog or humans. You may want to use Steps 2, 3, and 4 (Empathizing, Building Confidence, and Redirecting) to attempt to impress the seriousness of the situation upon them. Be firm but gentle, as some people may not be ready to hear the bad news. If they feel overwhelmed or perceive an attack they will be less likely to call you or another trainer for help. Ask for contact information so you can follow up and schedule a proper consultation.

Running a business without proper marketing is like running an engine without oil. But running a car with the wrong kind of oil will get you into trouble, too, just as there's no point spending time and money on marketing that doesn't work. If you're not satisfied with the results of your current marketing efforts, it's time to take a look under the hood. Read on for the most common reasons marketing fails for dog pros.

1. Not sticking with projects long enough

Most marketing efforts have a delay time. People need time to make decisions, to be exposed to a new service or idea multiple times before committing. And you may be reaching the right people at the wrong time. They might not need your service right now, or they may be too busy with other things to pull the trigger. If you stop your marketing efforts too soon, you won't be in front of them when the time is right.

Give any marketing project at least six months, a full year if possible, before assessing its effectiveness. It really can take that long, and throwing in the towel too early means losing out on the rewards of your labor and investment.

2. Not doing enough marketing

Most dog pros simply don't do enough marketing. Not only does inadequate marketing lower your chances of being noticed, but you also miss out on the cumulative effect of multiple projects building on each other. The more marketing efforts you have running at a given time, the more exposures a potential client has to your company. And the boost each project receives from the others can shorten the time it takes to see results, too.

3. Straying off topic or message

Good marketing should show off your expertise and professionalism while giving potential clients insight into the benefits and experience of working with you. More than once I've heard from clients who were seeing little to no response to powerful projects such as a regular column in the local paper or a lecture series. But when we looked together at the implementation of these projects the reason for failure was clear: Articles about poisonous plants or good dog biscuit recipes or effective tick removal and lectures on dog breeds aren't likely to get the phone ringing for dog training. These topics don't convey what a trainer has to offer, what change she can bring to a dog owner's life, how effectively she can solve problems. An article on tick removal by a dog walker, however, would be a much more appropriate show of expertise. And published dog biscuit recipes would effectively show the extra mile a pet sitter is willing to go for her charges.

4. Using the wrong marketing message

If you're already mindful of building your marketing around a message but aren't getting the results you want, assess the message itself. Is it aimed at your target audience, or are you accidentally marketing to other dog pros or the dogs themselves? Because we feel so strongly about helping dogs we often focus on how our services benefit them. But even dogs who run roughshod over their households aren't the ones making the hiring decisions. Your marketing message should be focused primarily on how you will make their peoples' lives better.

When crafting the marketing message, trainers should remember that potential clients aren't dog pros and that most of them aren't behavior geeks, either. They're just people who want to enjoy a well-behaved dog. So don't use your website and other precious marketing space and time to lecture them about the need to improve their relationship with their dog, or to learn about their dog's needs, or to tell them that they're the ones who need the training. It may all be true, but it isn't good marketing. Instead, tell people how you can bring them relief, make life with their dog easier, help them get a calm and well-behaved dog, etc. Once you gain their trust you have the opportunity to impact their relationship with their dog.

The message of human relief- from worry, from guilt, from an over-energized dog- is a strong one for walking, pet sitting, daycare, and boarding businesses, too.

5. Not maintaining visual consistency

I've seen dog pros put tremendous effort into their marketing only to see disappointing results because they broke the visual branding rule: Everything should look like everything else. All of your materials-website, printed pieces, logo clothing, handouts, newsletters, car signs, business cards, everything and anything-should be instantly recognizable as yours. I should be able to tell, at a glance, that I'm seeing something from your company. If your newsletter looks different from your brochure, and your website has its own look separate from both, you're losing the cumulative effect of repeat exposure. In addition to a consistent marketing message, make sure your potential clients are exposed to a uniform visual identity.

6. Marketing to the wrong audience

This mistake dampens your results, eats your time, and kills morale. Screening emails and calls from people who aren't the right match for your services is discouraging and inefficient. If you're getting too many calls that don't pan out, check that your message is getting to the right people. Are you placing your articles in papers read by the right demographic? Is your newsletter in vet offices located in the right geographical area and serving a population likely to want, appreciate, and be able to afford your professional services? Are you networking with pet supply stores and shelters frequented by the same? In short, analyze each marketing project and referral source to be sure it's directed at the people most likely to use your services.

7. Doing the wrong marketing

If you're spending more money than time on your marketing, chances are you could improve your results by reversing that equation. Passive marketing-advertisements, direct mail, print or online Yellow Pages, etc.-is rarely effective for small dog service businesses. Though there are exceptions, you'll often find if you take a moment to compare the revenue from these efforts against their cost, the numbers don't pan out.

Instead, put time into community-based marketing. Community marketing uses education, information, and entertainment to expose potential customers to your business. Projects like newsletters, lectures, article writing, event organizing, humane education programs, a content-rich website, free class passes for referral sources, etc., give people a window into your expertise and what you can do for them. All an ad can do is tell your potential audience how great you are, and most of us, if we bother to read ads at all, do so with skeptical eyes. Instead, choose community marketing projects that show people who you are and expose them to the benefits you can provide.

8. Forgetting the call to action

Finally, don't forget to explicitly suggest to your potential clients what they might do to get relief from a less-than-perfectly behaved dog: They should call you. Be sure your contact information is on all your materials, and tell people what to do with it. Don't be shy. You don't have to (and shouldn't) plaster huge red letters screaming "Call Now!" across the top of your newsletter, or blinking ones on your website's homepage. But don't forget to tell them you can help: "Tired of coming home to a whirling dervish? We can help. Call or email to schedule your initial consult, the first step toward a customized training plan (or to joining our daycare, etc.). Let us help you enjoy your dog (or your vacation, etc.)." Your call to action should be specific to the kind of work you take, and based on the central concerns your clients have. What makes them call you, what are they wanting relief from? Build your call to action to speak directly to their needs.

If you don't have the steady stream of clients you want, the first step is to ask yourself if you're doing enough marketing. If not, set aside some time each week to top off the oil in your business engine. If you're already marketing but not seeing the results you'd hoped for, give your plan a tune-up by assessing your efforts on each of the points above.
